Freedom of Speech

Our constitutional rights should not be taken for granted. Our right of freedom of speech is one of the fundamental rights without which our lives would be much different.

Of course, there are limitations on our freedom of speech, for instance one cannot yell "Fire" in a crowded theatre. There are also limitations on certain types of speech which may incite riots or such.

However, what makes our nation great is that we do not have to fear being jailed or fined for what we say-it is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. It can be lost.

"Free speech carries with it some burden to listen." (Warren E. Burger, Richmond Newspaper, Inc. v. Virginia, 448 U.S. 555, 576 (1980)). It is that "burden to listen" that appears to be missing in the debate concerning free speech today, especially on our college campuses and involving political speech. This should frighten all of us.
